The Tapestry of Imperfections

The Tapestry of Imperfections is a large collaborative recycled textile artwork that began as part of The War Inside, a show exploring what it means to live with invisible illnesses. The tapestry accompanied the exhibition and was created as a means of inviting a wider audience to take part and contribute to the theme in a practical way.

In The Tapestry of Imperfections, the subject of hidden conditions is broadened to become about everything we carry beneath the surface: habits, fears, stories, challenges, joys, everything that makes us unique, woven into the same piece, which becomes a representation of our collectivity.

Each workshop begins with a conversation, which opens up the theme and is used to develop a design. Participants are then encouraged to explore the subject further through writing, drawing, and discussion, before translating their ideas into textile pieces using a simple, accessible weaving approach.

The weaving itself is intentionally open and intuitive, moving away from traditional techniques and instead encouraging a spontaneous, “no-rules”, drawing-with-fabric approach that allows participants to focus on creativity and expression.

Since its beginnings in 2023, The Tapestry of Imperfections has toured different venues, involving over 500 participants, and has grown into an impressive 24 metres of shared stories.
